Sony VAIO VGN-FZ485U

-May 15, 2008-
I talked to myself at the first time I saw this laptop, "Wow, this is another promising VAIO." Well, I must admit that I was wrong. VAIO VGN-FZ485U looks good and the specification is not bad either. Nevertheless, what annoying is its price. PC Nation sells VGN-FZ485U for $1940 and of course the other laptop retailers also sell it around that number. As we already know, Sony is obsessed with its Blu ray. After PS 3, Sony introduced its Blu ray feature to many of its laptops. VAIO VGN-FZ485U also uses Blu ray instead of HD DVD.
Unfortunately, the Blu ray feature made this laptop comes with expensive price tag on it. There is nothing special about the design and specification of this laptop. The silver color looks very normal (without any customization) but it's not ugly either. But you can customize it by asking Sony if you want. Make sure you buy the laptop from their official retailers if you really want to modify the design.
Obviously Sony VAIO VGN-FZ485U is another media laptop (remember the Blu ray feature). Media laptop usually has comfortable keyboard and touchpad. VGN-FZ485U is not an exception despite it's not the best in the business. The features also meet my requirement. 3 USB ports and 1 FireWire port seem enough for this kind of notebook. But there is one interesting part which is the BD-RE drive. BD-RE drive acts as Blu-ray and also DVD burner. It's rare to see any media laptop use BD-RE beside the new VGN-FZ485U.
Now let's talk about its specification. With Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 (2.1 GHz) and 300 GB hard disk capacity, VGN-FZ485U looks very promising. However, the hard drive spins at 4,200 rpm. I recommend you to change the hard drive to only 250 GB capacity but spins at better speed rate (5,400 rpm). Above all, Sony VAIO VGN-FZ485U is a good media laptop but it's too expensive for most people.
